Treatment for Teens with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Treatment for Teens with Premenstrual Dysphoric DisorderPremenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Description:

In providing holistic treatment for teen mental health and substance abuse disorders at Paradigm San Francisco, we’ve seen from experience that there can be an array of different factors that contribute to a teen’s current struggles. These factors may range from the environmental to trauma to physical and nutritional. With this in mind, at Paradigm San Francisco, we design treatment plans to address all aspects of teens’ well-being, which includes careful consideration and addressing of physical factors. One of the most predominant physical factors present in adolescents is of course the hormonal fluctuations that occur, which are more dynamic than any other time in a person’s life. One of the specific support programs we’ve designed to this end is our Teen Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder treatment.

Teen Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a severe form of Premenstrual Syndrome (or PMS) which can cause extreme negative effects on their moods. The mood disturbances associated with PMDD can include cycles of depression and anxiety that are significant enough that they disrupt the teens’ ability function properly in their responsibilities, their relationships, and their daily lives.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Symptoms:

Similar to PMS, the symptoms of Teen Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder usually surface preceeding the menstrual cycle. While it’s common for many teenage girls to experience some fluctuation of mood and energy during their cycles, teens with PMDD experience symptoms that are debilitating, including things such as: overwhelming anxiety, inability to make decisions, depression, sudden mood shifts, extreme fatigue, and more. These feelings can be so overwhelming that they cause tension in relationships, problems in school, stress with responsibilities, and extreme low overall mood. This depressive cycle can look similar to a cycle of Depression or Bipolar Disorder; however, with Teen PMDD, teens usually feel relatively good, for the other two (or so) weeks of their cycle. If your teen is experiencing symptoms like these for only two weeks of the month, she might be suffering from Teen PMDD, rather than Anxiety or Depression, and it’s extremely important for them to get them premenstrual dysphoric disorder treatment.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Treatment:

Because of the similarities that teen premenstrual dysphoric disorder shows to some mental illnesses, it’s imperative that teens receive a thorough and proper diagnosis, so they can be treated correctly. For teens that are diagnosed with PMDD without another co-occurring disorder (such as a mood disorder or substance abuse condition), teens will usually proceed in premenstrual dysphoric disorder treatment with an endocrinologist or doctor, in order to address the physical imbalances that are present. For teens with PMDD as well as a co-occurring disorder, we provide treatment at Paradigm San Francisco that will incorporate physical measures to address the PMDD symptoms, as well as working with teens through a treatment plan, specifically tailored to all of her needs and goals.
